March / April News & Updates
March/April 2024
President's Message:
Our Summer School Early Bird registration has been extended until April 5th. We have over 450 students registered and feel it is appropriate to extend this option to allow parents to select the best choice for your child this summer. Please go to our web page https://www.aef4kids.com/aef-summer-academy and register today! We have many classes that

We finished three weeks of 6th grade Outdoor Science Camp with most of our elementary schools. The students had a great time up in the mountains learning about outdoor science and participating in hiking, science activities, archery and rock climbing. Parents, teachers and students have given us positive feedback on the opportunity afforded to the students to be able to attend this three day experience. I cannot thank enough the Boys Scouts of America Greater Los Angeles team who made this happen. We have our last four schools attending this week and what a great way to end Spring Break by heading up to camp. On the second night, Brightwood and Emery Park students were very fortunate to experience snow and wake up to freshly fallen snow everywhere. Many of the students had never seen, touched or witnessed snow fall. It was a wonderful experience.

Joanna Vargas and her Pumpkin Run Team presented a check for over $7,000 to AEF for the partnership we have with the Downtown Alhambra Business Association (DABA) fundraising for the students of the Alhambra USD. Each year AEF collaborates with DABA to raise funds from the Pumpkin Run and so far the Pumpkin Run has contributed a total of over $21,000 to AEF. We are already preparing for the 2024 Run in October!

AEF will be partnering with the City of Monterey Park for the 108th's Birthday Celebration from May 9th - 12th, 2024 at Barnes Park. Proceeds from the beer garden will be donated to AEF to continue the support our programs and enhance educational opportunities for all students in the Alhambra USD. This is our first partnership with the City of Monterey Park and we look forward to more opportunities in the future. Make sure you stop by our booth and come enjoy the birthday celebration.

Each year the Pasadena Showcase House offers a unique experience to tour a home that has been fully transformed. This year's home is the Potter Daniels Manor, a striking English Tudor Revival Style estate designed by the Postle Company of Los Angeles, builders of the Pasadena Playhouse. The manor, set behind a pair of ornate iron gates and set on a verdant acre of land, boasts a storied background coupled with a prestigious designation as a Pasadena City Landmark. With its elegant façade, rich details and old-world charm, the estate provides the idyllic backdrop for an evening of enchantment.

Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts is an all-volunteer organization. With the hard work and dedication of its 200+ members, the organization raises funds from its major benefit, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design—one of the oldest, largest, and most successful home and garden tours in the country. In addition to producing the Showcase House, members volunteer their time toward the organization's four philanthropic initiatives: Since 1948, they have donated over $25 million dollars to support art and music throughout the region. Buy tickets and enjoy a wonderful time and have lunch or dinner after your tour https://pasadenashowcase.org/tickets/#plan
On behalf of the AEF Board of Directors, I want to thank the community for your continued support of AEF, AUSD, and our students. Together, we make living in Alhambra, Monterey Park, San Gabriel, Rosemead, and South San Gabriel a better place. Great Schools Make Great Communities!

As Spring Break comes to an end, enjoy Easter with your family.
Thank you for your continued support!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

February News & Updates
FEBRUARY 2024
President's Message:re Hean
We are in full swing, getting ready for our Summer Enrichment Academy and Summer High School program. This year, our elementary program will be held at Marguerita Elementary School in Alhambra with our high school program back at San Gabriel High School. Our afternoon 4th-8th grade classes will also be held at San Gabriel High School with bus transportation from Marguerita for parents who want to take advantage of the transportation opportunity. Please visit www.aef4kids.com for more information about classes offered, registration, and program dates.

We are very excited to partner with the District to send all 6th grade students to Outdoor Science Camp. We started our pilot program back in March 2019 with four elementary schools, and then, unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic changed our world. Post pandemic, AEF and AUSD have partnered with the Boys Scouts of America to secure a camp and a wonderful outdoor program. The first schools to attend will be Park and Fremont Elementary Schools from March 4th-6th, with Baldwin and Granada coming up from March 6th-8th. The rest of the schools will be following over the next two weeks in March for an educational fun time with fellow students and staff spending time in the great outdoors.

As parents, it may be a bit nerve-racking to let your child go for three days away from home. I promise you the experience of being in the mountains and participating in a hands-on outdoor science program is second to none. The best part about the three days is not only the great food prepared by the camp staff but no technology! This allows for bonding time with camp staff and fellow classmates and learning to work with one another face-to-face in person without texting or using Discord or iChat to communicate. If you have any questions about the camp and the experience, please do not hesitate to contact your principal or myself directly at sperry@aef4kids.com with any questions. This experience is so important for our students that AEF has contributed $50,000 to support the district's efforts to ensure every 6th grader can attend. We also set up a donation site to Adopt A Camper, where you can donate any amount.

Each and every year, AEF participates and supports our local festivals. We have been honored to be part of Northrup School's First Annual Lunar New Year Festival and Night Market and the Alhambra Lunar New Year Festival this past Sunday. We handed out over 1,200 fortune cookies at both events and provided information about AEF Summer Programs. As always, it is a great way to connect with the community to showcase how AEF supports our schools.

Please vote to make AEF the Best Non-Profit in the San Gabriel Valley. Last year, we were voted the Most Favorite for 2023 and want to top that honor as the Best for 2024. Here is the link to cast your vote before March 17, 2024. Thank you for your support!

I had the pleasure of meeting the new owner of SKYZONE, Greg Olbrich this past weekend. I told him the community is very excited about the Grand Opening of SKYZONE on March 1st, located at 1021 S. Attached is a flier to learn more about SKYZONE and the offerings they will provide. https://www.skyzone.com/alhambra/

December News & Updates
December 2023
President's Message:re Hean
I want to thank all AUSD employees, community members, AYSO Region 60 Soccer parents, and local businesses who supported our Spark of Love Toy Drive with our Alhambra Firefighters. Your generous contributions enabled us to provide joyous holiday gifts for many of our AUSD students and families. I want to commend and send my heartfelt thank you to the Alhambra Firefighters Association and Alhambra Fire Department for stepping up every year to make sure no child is left behind and has a happy holiday.

In partnership with our firefighters, hundreds of children were able to select their own gifts this past weekend and enjoy a pancake breakfast at Alhambra Fire Station 71. It was a great morning for all involved and AEF is very proud and honored to partner with our Alhambra Firefighters to support this worthy cause. AEF will double our monetary commitment for next year, as the need is greater and every child should enjoy Christmas with family and gifts.

I want to thank everyone who donated toys and money to make this a successful event.
AEF distributed over 4,000 books to all of our kindergarten through third grade classes. It is always exciting to witness the smiles of children when they select a new book to take home and keep in their growing home libraries. Over the past decade, AEF has distributed over 50,000 books to our students in the District and we look forward to providing more books. I would like to thank our partners who have helped us in the past, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association.

This has been an extraordinary year for AEF with all of the programs and funding we have been involved with. This past year we partnered with the Pasadena Showcase House, Citadel Shopping Extravaganza, Alhambra Pumpkin Run, Alhambra Downtown Business Association, Alhambra Chamber of Commerce, AYSO Region 60 Alhambra/Monterey Park, Alhambra Firefighters Association, Alhambra Teachers Association, City of Alhambra, City of Monterey Park, Alhambra Council PTA, and of course, our own Alhambra USD to ensure we enrich the lives of our students. I cannot thank all of our partners enough for your support and commitment.

Have a happy and safe holiday with your family. See you all in 2024!

November News & Updates
December 2023
President's Message:
In forty (40) days, 2023 will be in the past, and we will be looking forward to the 2024 New Year. I am always amazed at how quickly each year goes by, especially when trying to expand and enrich the lives of our students. Each and every day I am impressed with our teachers, classified staff, certificated support staff, administrators, and volunteers who give countless hours, on and off the clock, to ensure Alhambra Unified School District is providing a well-rounded education for our students to be successful and productive now and in the future. As we count down to the New Year, we have several opportunities to give back to our community and students.

First, we have "Giving Tuesday" on November 28th. This is a great way to select your favorite non-profit organization, hopefully AEF, and make a monetary contribution. All of our donations received through PayPal equates to 92.02% supporting our students. This is a remarkable return on investment and our Board of Directors ensures donations benefit our students. You can go to our website to see which program to donate and support. https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/2257144 Click on the link to make a donation on November 28th.

Secondly, once again we are partnering with our Alhambra Firefighters Association, Alhambra Unified School District, Alhambra Teachers Association, Rotary Club of Alhambra, and several businesses in Alhambra for the annual Spark of Love Toy Drive. There are collection bins at all AUSD schools, Alhambra fire stations, and our AEF Office. I am asking all of us to join our firefighters by making this holiday better for our families by donating an unwrapped toy. We will be hosting an early collection of toys with AYSO Region 60 Soccer on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at 8:00 am. AEF will also be accepting donations to purchase gift cards for our middle and high school students. For those of you who are interested, please consider giving to AEF to help purchase gift cards to give to our HOPE and foster families at our upcoming Spark of Love event. AEF has set up a link https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/2257144 where you can choose to donate the amount you are comfortable giving. Our goal is to raise at least $10,000 in an effort to provide each 6th-12th grade student with a gift card. All donations are tax-deductible. After you donate online, you will receive a PayPal Giving Fund tax receipt through email.
Each and every year starting the week after Christmas, the City of Alhambra is looking for volunteers to decorate the Alhambra Rose Parade float. Volunteers are needed for Alhambra's 95th Rose Parade Float! Dry decorations are Saturdays on December 2, 9, 16 and 23 and floral decorations are from December 26-31st. This is a great time to work alongside other community members to put your mark on the beautiful float that will travel down Colorado Blvd. on January 1, 2024. Sign-up today: https://secure.rec1.com/CA/city-of-alhambra/catalog

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

News and Updates August 2023
August 2023
President's Message here
The first day of school can be full of excitement, nervousness or hesitation. Even though my son was not real excited about school starting, like many other classmates, he was happy to see friends that he had not seen for two months. For parents with a kindergartener, watching your child walk through the school gates was filled with a bit of apprehension as you let your little one go. For me, my sixth grader now wants to be dropped off with no hug goodbye in front of his friends and picked up out back with the "big kids." He loses out on the hug goodbye, but does get picked up on the backside of Park School.
I want to thank the AEF community for voting AEF #1 Favorite Non Profit Organization from the San Gabriel Valley News Group Reader's Choice Awards. Our ALL volunteer Board of Directors work hard everyday to enrich the lives of all students in the Alhambra USD and will continue to do so. Thank you again and please do not hesitate to become involved with AEF as a Board Member to continue us achieve our goal. http://sgvn.readerschoice.la/

Make your reservation by calling our office or going online for the 17th Annual "Service to Education" Gala on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at the Los Angeles/San Gabriel Hilton. Please plan on attending this fun and exciting evening.

This is a great day to start your Christmas shopping early since everyone who purchases a ticket receives extra discounts on top of already marked down pricing. AEF receives $25 for every ticket sold as well as additional money from the raffle tickets sold if we have a minimum of 100 shoppers who attend the event. This will be the 10th Anniversary for the run and we hope you will join us for a great morning to run or walk on Main Street and then enjoy the City of Alhambra's Harvest Festival afterwards. AEF has once again partnered with the Downtown Business Association of Alhambra for this event. https://runsignup.com/alhambrapumpkinrun

I want to give a BIG THANK YOU to all of our staff that made AEF Summer School a wonderful experience for over 1,000 students who attended at Ynez Elementary School and San Gabriel High School. I read our parent feedback and want to thank you for taking the time to fill out the form to allow us to continue to provide the best possible program available. It's hard to believe that we are already planning for next year and will keep you all posted of start date, classes and other programs we will offer.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

News and Updates May 2023
May 2023
President's Message here
Can you believe today is the last day of school? The 2022-2023 school year went by so quickly with another year in the books. Seniors and their families will be celebrating today at the Rose Bowl as all three commencement ceremonies will take place throughout the day. Thank you Alhambra School Board, Superintendent Dr. Denise Jaramillo and Executive Cabinet for giving our AUSD high school graduates the opportunity to celebrate this milestone achievement with as many family and friends as they would like to invite for the third year. The stadium holds 90,000 people! Wouldn't it be nice if one our local high schools could have a sell out crowd?

Congratulations to all the parents who have an eighth grade promoting to high school and all of our 2023 Seniors Graduating today! You should be proud and celebrate this milestone.
AEF distributed over 3,500 books to our kindergarten through third grade students this past week. All students in those grades should have received a new book to add to their home libraries, and we thank the LIFT students who assisted in preparing the books for distribution to our schools. It takes a small army to prepare all those books for our students, and we are grateful to our LIFT students for their partnership.

In partnership with RIF, we have distributed nearly 43,000 books that have positively impacted the lives of AUSD's TK-3rd grade students since 2005. The purpose is to give children the opportunity to own books, motivate children to read, and encourage a culture of literacy.

Brightwood Students select a book

AEF will celebrate the 18th Annual "Service to Education" Gala on September 16, 2023 at the Los Angeles/San Gabriel Hilton. Each year AEF honors those who have given back to education and who make an impact in the community for the students in the Alhambra USD. "Save the Date" for this fun evening, including silent and live auctions, while supporting our educational community.

Many of our Board of Directors volunteered at the Pasadena Showcase House of the Arts this past month as docents for the 2023 Showcase House. I want to thank all of you who purchased tickets to view the Stewart Home in Pasadena to help raise money for arts and music. The Pasadena Showcase of the Arts has raised millions of dollars to support local programs throughout Los Angeles County. Each year, PSHA awards gifts and grants to a broad and diverse list of non-profit organizations to support their efforts in the community. They underwrite concerts to ensure that the joy of live music is made available to a wide range of audiences. They support choirs, musical theater, school marching bands, dance programs, opera, jazz bands and orchestras. This enriches the community and provides opportunities for a variety of groups – from students to seniors – to learn, enjoy and grow from their experiences in these programs.

We still have some summer school classes open, so please look on-line and register before June 1, 2023. https://www.aef4kids.com/aef-summer-academy

Thank you for your continued support of AEF and our initiatives that provide enriching experiences for our schools, students, and community!

Stay safe & healthy!

MARCH 2023
President's Message here
With only three months left in this school year, those of you with school-age children may be wondering what opportunities are available for your children during the summer. Consider AEF Summer School Academy for elementary students at Ynez School and the AEF Enrichment Program at San Gabriel High School for high school students. Registration begins on Monday, March 13th at 8:00 a.m. Please review our summer school catalog and select courses that will best meet the needs of your child. Our programs are taught by credentialed teachers and use curriculum that is accepted and approved by Alhambra USD and neighboring school districts.

Come out on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Alhambra Park for the 4th Annual "Read Across America" community event sponsored by the Alhambra Teachers Association. AEF is honored to be a participant at this great event that celebrates and encourages reading. This ATA sponsored event will include reading stations and reading activities where children can collect passport stamps that can be redeemed for free books they can take home with them. The event is from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Alhambra Park. Hope to see you there!

AEF will be moving the "Service to Education" Gala to September 2023. With promotions, graduations and end of year activities in May, the committee felt the event would be a great way to start a new school year by celebrating the wonderful people in the community who make an impact on our children's education. More information will be shared next month with a date and location about this fun evening for all to attend.

Thank you to all of you who each and every month support AEF through donations, volunteering and more importantly, giving back to our students every day. Without all of you, our school district would not be the best in the Southern California region. Thank you!

Stay safe & healthy!

President’s Message

News and Updates January 2023
January 2023
President's Message here
As we ended the first half of the 2022-2023 school year, it was great to see San Gabriel High School Varsity Football team play for the state championship in Atascadero, CA on December 10th. The outcome was not what we wanted, but I am very proud of our Matadors who made it all the way to the state championship. Head Coach Kevin Encinas and his staff do an outstanding job teaching sportsmanship, determination and endurance. Great job, team!

On Monday, January 2, 2023, our San Gabriel High School Cheer rode and walked with the Rose Parade Opening Unit to start off "America's New Year Celebration" of the 134th Rose Parade presented by Honda - "Turning the Corner." The Matador Cheer Team opened up the show on live television with President Amy Wainscott. Way To Go, Matadors!
The Pumpkin Run Team presented AEF with a check for over $6,000 for supporting and volunteering at the event, surpassing our initial goal of $2,500. We had over 1,400 runners and walkers that morning for the 10K, 5K and Kids 1K runs which brought our community together and were followed by the Halloween costume contest and fall festival. I want to thank the Downtown Alhambra Business Association and Run Coordinator, Joanna Vargas, for their continued support of AEF and the children of the Alhambra Unified School District. It was great to see all the school employees, students and parents participate this year.

I will end on this note. When we watch or read news of a mass shooting, we say to ourselves I hope it never happens in my community. I was awoken early Sunday morning around 1:00 a.m. by helicopters circling overhead. I looked at my phone and could not believe what I read, "Mass Shooting in Monterey Park." I was totally in disbelief and immediately texted our AEF Board Member Thomas Wong, also a Monterey Park Councilman to see how he was handling this terrible news. Throughout the day, I was receiving texts, emails and phone calls asking how this could happen in our community. When I went to the soccer field to watch my son play, parents from Alhambra and Monterey Park were questioning how this happens in our quiet close knit community.

There is no answer that anyone can give to understand why anyone would commit such a horrendous act on innocent people enjoying an evening out. Please make sure you observe your child's behavior and do not be afraid to talk to him/her about what occurred. I know I had to talk with my 5th grade son about the incident and talk about why some people behave this way. I found an excellent resource that assists parents with communicating about gun violence at https://www.nasponline.org/ National Association of School Psychologists. There are many great resources to assist you on the site that will help explain the inevitable.

Make sure to give a hug and tell your child/children you love them each and every day!

Stay safe & healthy!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

News and Updates November 2022
November 2022
President's Message here
As the year is coming to an end (yes, it is almost December!), all of us at AEF have much to be thankful for. Each year many loyal & dedicated community members, AUSD staff members, families, and businesses support AEF and our initiatives, ensuring that all children in the Alhambra USD receive equitable access to so many outstanding programs. Whether it is a child's first home library book, understanding and navigating how to fill out a college application, receiving a scholarship, playing a musical instrument, or learning about science, these are only some one of the many programs we are very grateful to have your support. It is not easy during challenging times to raise money so our children have opportunities to enrich their education, and for that we say THANK YOU!
I want to thank everyone who participated in the Shopping Extravaganza on September 24th. It was a fun-filled day with many shoppers finding great bargains at the Citadel and spending time with friends. AEF sold over 100 tickets and was able to raise over $6,200 that will directly benefit our students.

The 9th Annual Pumpkin Run was a tremendous success this year. With 1,500 runners participating in the 10K, 5K and the kids' 1K run, everyone had fun. It was great to see the community return for this annual event, and special thanks to all of the city departments who worked together to ensure a successful day. Thank you to Joanna Vargas and the Downtown Business Association of Alhambra, Alhambra Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Alhambra for sponsoring the Pumpkin Run each year, along with the Halloween Costume Contest. This is one of the premier community events in Alhambra,
Our Alhambra Fire Department needs your help! Spark of Love Toy Drive has begun, and AEF is partnering with our local firefighters again this year to ensure a special holiday season for all of our families in the AUSD. Please stop by one of our four Alhambra Fire stations, elementary schools, or the AEF office to drop off an unwrapped toy that will put a smile on a child's face on Christmas morning. Every year our firefighters volunteer their time to make our community a better place to live, and we can all make a difference by giving back.

We have many more projects ahead and would love for you to help us make them successful. Please email us at support@aef4kids.com if you want to join the Board of Directors to make a difference in our schools.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.

Stay safe & healthy!

Spark of Love Toy Drive
Each year the Alhambra Educational Foundation partners with the Alhambra Unified School District and our local Alhambra Fire Department for the annual SPARK OF LOVE TOY DRIVE.
Look for boxes at the school sites, and please donate toys for needy students in our community.
We will also accept monetary donations, which will be used to purchase gift cards for our middle and high school students. Monetary donations can be made through this link:
Thank you in advance for helping us make the holiday season a little brighter for our AUSD families!
Thank you to all who participated
in the Pumpkin Run!
Thank you for participating in the 9th Annual Pumpkin Run! A special thank you to the City of Alhambra and the Downtown Business Association of Alhambra for sponsoring and hosting this premier Alhambra event.
Reading is Fundamental (RIF)
AUSD's TK-3rd grade students will soon receive their first of three books this year funded by AEF's Dr. LaVonne Wood Literacy Fund. We believe every child deserves an opportunity to own books for their home library, learn how to read, and obtain the fundamental building blocks of literacy to achieve their highest potential.

News and Updates September 2022
September 2022
President's Message here
It has been over a month since school began...new teacher, new school for some, new grade level and new friends go hand in hand with the changes, jitters and joy that are part of every new school year for our children. It is always heartwarming to see Alhambra USD staff, teachers, administrators, and volunteers welcome students with big smiles and enthusiasm to ease the first day of school nerves. As an involved AUSD volunteer and community member for over 50 years, I want to thank all the employees for what appeared to be a very successful and smooth opening day. It can be stressful for families and staff alike, and AUSD's professionalism and genuine care is appreciated not only on the first day but throughout the year - THANK YOU!
We have a couple of events I would like you to support over the next couple of months. Coming up this Saturday, September 24th is the 17th Annual Shopping Extravaganza at the Citadel Outdoor Mall in Commerce, CA. AEF receives $25.00 for each ticket sold and we receive an additional bonus for selling over 100 tickets and having over 100 shoppers attend the Shopping Extravaganza. We have met this goal since we started six years ago and need your support to continue our winning streak of earning the bonus funding. It is a great day to shop with extra discounts, lunch and beverage tasting throughout the day. Please purchase your ticket today! https://citadelshopx.com/buy-now/

Secondly, we are partnering with the Downtown Alhambra Business Association and the City of Alhambra for the Annual Pumpkin Run. This is a great event that brings the community together for family fun. Put a team together, run with your family or just come out to meet new friends on Sunday, October 30, 2022 to enjoy a fun morning. Afterwards, visit the City of Alhambra Farmer's Market, Kids Costume Contest, Harvest Festival and much much more. Go to www.alhambrapumkinrun.com to sign up today!
AEF Board Member, Martin Ulloa and Alhambra USD Board President, Dr. Marcia Wilson, along with Lori Ulloa, accept a $2000 grant from the Felix Y. Manalo Foundation - Care For Humanity. We thank them for their generous support and contribution.

News and Updates June 2022
JUNE 2022
President's Message here
June has been a busy month for everyone at AEF. We started our summer school enrichment classes with over 1100 students enrolled. Our elementary classes were full by the month of April, and we could not be more excited. Please look at what our students are doing below in the Summer Academy K-8 section.

At the 626 event, we handed out over 250 water bottles, reusable shopping bags, and pens to all the eager bike riders, skaters, walkers, and runners who passed by the AEF booth. It was an inspiring day for everyone involved. We thank the Metro – Los Angeles County Metropolitan Authority and the City of Alhambra for putting on this great community event.
I have no words to express my gratitude to everyone who supported our “Under the Stars” AEF Fundraiser earlier this month. We had over 175 in attendance - attendees mingled, bid on silent auction items, ate great food, and cheered on our honorees. It was a very successful event, and I want to thank all our sponsors who continue to support AEF and our new sponsors who are now part of our AEF family. We honor those who give back to education daily to ensure all our Alhambra Unified School District students receive every opportunity possible. Thank you to the community members, City Staff, elected officials, AUSD and friends of AEF who were in attendance – It was a great evening! Special recognition goes to The Ratkovich Company for allowing us to host the event outdoors at The Alhambra!

I had the honor of handing out 15 student scholarships for the Al Domasin Memorial Scholarship on June 14, 2022 with his wife, Peggy Domasin. AEF was contacted by a friend of Al Domasin, who passed who wanted to honor his legacy as an Alhambra High School graduate. See article below.

We have many more projects ahead and would love for you to help us make them successful. Please email us at support@aef4kids.com if you would like to join the Board of Directors to make a difference in your schools.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we wish you a healthy summer, and let's all work together to make Alhambra USD the best in California for our children.

Al Domasin Memorial Scholarship

June 14th was a special day for 15 Alhambra High School graduates who were awarded the Al Domasin Memorial Scholarship.

Al grew up in Alhambra and Monterey Park and graduated from Alhambra High School in 1973. Al was a great athlete who played basketball and was on the track & field team while in school. He was an avid antique collector, an excellent skier, and enjoyed playing golf with his buddies and his wife Peggy at the Newport Beach Country Club. He was a friendly, fun-loving guy who always met everyone with a kind and genuine smile. His wife and golf buddies held a gold tournament to award 15 lucky Alhambra High School students $2000 college scholarships. His wife, Peggy, stated, “Al got his foundation at Alhambra High School and we wanted to give back to his alma mater through these scholarships in his honor. AEF wants to thank the following community members from Al's world who made this all possible: wife Peggy Domasin, Minnie Domasin, Gary Domasin, Joan & Terry Solon, Ray & Sandy Moran and Doug & Kathy Forde.

Congratulations to the students who received the scholarships: Anais Barajas, Liam Chang, Kyley Flores, Justin Hernandez, Alexis Hong, Edmond Huang, Kimberly Kyana, Pham Mendoza, Mikaela Ngo, Athena Romano, Jimena Tran, Lani Wong, Brandon Wong, Caroline Young and Lana Young.
The Alhambra Educational Foundation’s K-8 Summer Academy provides an educational experience for our students beyond the range provided during the regular school year. Teachers have designed creative and engaging learning experiences that expand upon areas of interest to develop a lifelong love of learning.
The Summer Academy will feature a virtual Open House showcasing the student's work and learning. Teachers will compile pictures and video clips of learning activities and projects to create a video montage. We will post the videos on the AEF website. More information to come.

Thank you for choosing to send your child to AEF Summer Academy.

I am very excited to be able to return to in-person summer school at both Ramona Elementary for our Keiki Summer Academy and Alhambra High School for our High School Program.

Early Bird registration begins on Monday, March 7, 2022, at 8:00 am. You can go to www.aef4kids.com for more information on class offerings, dates, and times of our programs. We will be following Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines and protocols for schools. Early Bird registration is only for two weeks, so please register early before the price increases.

The Alhambra Teachers Association will be hosting their 3rd Annual Read Across America on March 19, 2022, from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at Alhambra Park. This is a fun community event with reading stations, crafts, entertainment and most importantly, an opportunity for children to select free books to take home. If you would like to donate children's reading books, please contact ATA at (626) 289-1933.

On March 20, 2022 from 10:00 am – 7:00 pm, AEF, City of Monterey Park and Johnny Thompson employees and family will be hosting a Tribute and Benefit Concert honoring Johnny Thompson. It will be a Day of Music at Barnes Park in Monterey Park with live band performances, food trucks, raffles, a tree planting ceremony and just good fun. Please come out and spend the day enjoying great music in honor of a man who gave so much to Alhambra USD students by enriching their lives through music. Go to www.aef4kids.com and click on scholarships to support music programs for students in the Alhambra USD.

Save the date of June 11, 2022, for our "Service to Education" evening. This year we will host an outdoor recognition of our honorees from 2020. This will be a fun event under the stars with great food, silent and live auctions, and most importantly, a time to finally be able to recognize our 2020 honorees who give back to education. Look for more information to come in next month’s e-newsletter.

It saddens me to say we lost a very dear person who gave so much to this school district. She was a very dear friend of mine and a wonderful individual who gave it her all to ensure AUSD was set up for continued success after she retired. Dr. Julie Hadden served this district for over 20 years in various administrative positions, retiring in 2007 as Superintendent. There will be a Celebration of Life and the Legacy of Dr. Hadden on March 26, 2022 at 10:00 am at Alhambra High School. AUSD Administrators have set up a scholarship fund in honor of Dr. Julie Hadden for anyone going into the field of education. Donations may be made at www.aef4kids.com under Julie Hadden Scholarship Fund.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we wish you a healthy spring and let's all work together to make Alhambra USD the best in California for our children.

Stay safe & healthy!

ATA's 3rd Annual Read Across America
A DAY OF MUSIC - NEW DATE
MARCH 20, 2022

Johnny Thompson attended Repetto Elementary School and was a 1961 Mark Keppel High School graduate. Johnny's love for music was contagious. He opened the Johnny Thompson Music store upon graduation, which for over 60 years served the San Gabriel Valley and the greater Los Angeles area and beyond. The big Johnny Thompson Music guitar sign became a glowing landmark of Monterey Park. Johnny never forgot people he knew from the youngest days, including lifelong connections to his favorite teachers and long-time friends. Please join us for the celebration of life and benefit concert on Sunday, March 20, 2022, at Barnes Park from 10:00 am - 7:00 pm, with bands and tributes playing all day.

January 2022
Message from the President
I want to congratulate the Mark Keppel High School Dance Group who performed at the 133rd Rose Parade presented by Honda with the theme Dream. Believe. Achieve. The dance team performed at the Opening Show with LeAnn Rimes and at the Closing Show with Jimmie Allen. This is such a wonderful accomplishment for these talented students and I hope you watched the parade on either ABC 7, NBC 4 or KTLA 5. Way to go Mark Keppel High School!

As we end 2021, we look back to see what a wonderful job our teachers, classified staff, administrators and especially our parents did to ensure our children were able to attend school in-person. With the new Omicron variant on the rise we have more work to do. We all must be vigilant to ensure we keep everyone safe around us so our children can continue to attend school in-person. We know this is better for them socially and mentally for a better education. Do your part and help reduce infection by getting vaccinated or a booster shot to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. This is something we all will be living with until science can find a solution to either eradicate or reduce transmission.

We have some important dates coming up. Please check out our calendar below. In conjunction with the City of Monterey Park, AEF will be honoring longtime business owner and musician, Johnny Thompson, on January 9, 2022 at Barnes Park in Monterey Park. Come join us for a day of celebration and great music! Program is from 11:00am - 7:00pm.

Save the date for our 16th Annual "Service to Education" Gala, which will be on Saturday, March 12, 2022. We are very excited to host this celebration again to honor those who give back to education and the community. We look forward to recognizing those who give of their time and resources to ensure our students in Alhambra USD receive the best education and experiences possible.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we wish you all a healthy new 2022 and let's all work together to make Alhambra USD the best in California for our children.

Stay safe & healthy!

Happy New Year!

July/August 2021
Message from the President
With summer coming to an end, I want to thank all of the parents who entrusted AEF with their child(ren) at either our elementary Summer Academy or our High School Summer Program. We had 136 students in our elementary program and over 425 in our high school summer school. We know the challenges parent were facing with wanting to be ensured their children were able to interact in a safe learning environment while attending school during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are honored with your trust in AEF to deliver a safe and enriching summer learning program.

How was your first day of school? As parents we are making decisions about the best learning environment for our child. Please make sure you are following and keeping up with all of the AUSD communication being sent to you from the District and your local school. Day one at Park School was very busy with excitement for students returning, nervousness for parents and joy for the teachers being able to see their students again. One teacher told, "this is a great day and we will get through this!" I could not agree more.

Alhambra Chamber of Commerce will be bringing back the Annual Pumpkin Run on Sunday, October 24, 2021. We will be sending out fliers through the schools to sign-up for this fun event. The City of Alhambra will also have fun activities for kids that day as well.

Save the date for our 16th Annual "Service to Education" Gala which will be on Saturday, March 12, 2022. We are very excited to host this great celebration again to honor those who give back to education and the community. We are excited to recognize those who give of their time and resources to ensure our students in Alhambra USD receive the best education and experiences possible.

You can support AEF by attending this year's Shopping Extravaganza on Saturday, September 25, 2021 from 9:00am to 6:00pm at the Citadel in Commerce, CA. AEF receives $25 for every ticket sold and you are entered into a daylong raffle opportunity to win gift cards while you are shopping. This is our fifth year participating and it is always fun to shop with friends or colleagues to purchase those holiday and birthday gifts early at discounted prices. Purchase your tickets today!

Enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to in-person learning for the 2021-22 school year!

Stay safe & healthy!

Sincerely,

Stephen R. Perry

The Alhambra Educational Foundation's Keiki Summer Academy and Summer High School would like to send a big MAHALO for your support and participation in our summer program this year. It was a joy to see our 1st - 8th grade students on campus learning and enjoying their interactions with peers and teachers at Keiki Academy. Please visit our website to view our summer school videos: www.aef4kids.com.

Thank you for sharing your children with us this summer. We hope to see them again next year!

Message from the President

Goodbye 2020 and welcome 2021! What a difference a year makes! One year ago, our District was so excited about our three high schools participating in the Rose Parade presented by Honda on January 1, 2020, students were playing sports, clubs were actively involved in school and community events and the senior class was looking ahead to graduation and college. Then COVID-19 entered our lives and changed everything we do from shopping to working from home or not at all and for our students, distance learning via Zoom. None of us foresaw how this disease would upend not only our personal lives, but the world. I am so grateful for the many community members and especially the employees of AUSD who have stepped up to support those in need and continue to provide a rigorous, engaging instructional program for our students.

This past August, the Alhambra Teachers Association and numerous other local groups along with AEF supported a food drive to assist our community. On December 19th, 2020 AEF partnered with the Alhambra Fire Department, Rotary Club of Alhambra, Alhambra USD, Tzu Chi and The Ratkovich Company to ensure that over 300 children and families were able to celebrate the holiday through the "Spark of Love" drive. It was great to see so many children smile when they received toys, gift cards and food to brighten their day. It truly is a collaborative effort in our community.

Summer School information will be in our February issue newsletter and on our web page.

It is with great sadness that I share the news about the loss of two wonderful individuals whom I was honored to serve with on the Alhambra Board of Education from 1988 - 1996. These two ladies were always strong advocates for children and well-respected by many including myself.

Former School Board Member Phyllis J. Rutherford passed away on December 26, 2020 due to complications from COVID while in the hospital. She served for 16 years on the AUSD Board and worked for the District for another nine years as an employee & volunteer. She always put children first and was an advocate for special education and needs of students by continuously championing for additional state and federal funding. Phyllis served on the Board from 1994 to 2000.

Former School Board member Dora S. Padilla was a true fighter for the underdog. Her motto was "To love a child - is to educate a child." Those words are what she told me back in 1988 when she called to congratulate me on my win for a seat on the Board of Education. I have never met a person who truly advocated for every child. Her passion was visual and performing arts. She wanted to ensure every child had the opportunity to participate in the arts during her 20 years on the School Board. Dora passed away on January 8, 2021 due to COVID complications. Dora served on the Board from 1978 - 1998.

These two ladies were instrumental in making AUSD what it is today.

Thank you to all of you who donated your Gala sponsorship and/or dinner tickets to AEF. This has helped our Foundation tremendously to continue to give back to the community and allow us to maintain our operations to support the students of AUSD. In our February e-newsletter, we will recognize all of our donors and give more details about our March virtual fundraiser.

I hope you all had a safe and wonderful holiday season and New Years with your families. I know for many of us, we had to limit the number of family members we could get together with due to the pandemic. Hopefully, you were able to connect with one another via Zoom, FaceTime or whatever technology allowed you to spend time together virtually.

Continue to stay safe & healthy and here is a great resource for parents to assist with dealing with your children during the pandemic.

Message from the President

Good afternoon to our AEF, AUSD and community families. As we continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, we have some exciting updates and news to pass along.

AEF will be supporting both the City of Alhambra and Monterey Park drive up Halloween Festivities (see fliers below). In Alhambra AEF Board Members will be in costume to hand out trick or treat bags prior to you entering the Haunted Parking Structure on October 31, 2020 on South Second Street from 11:00am - 2:00pm. In Monterey Park AEF will partner with Monterey Highlands School and PTA to hand out trick or treat bags on Thursday, October 29, 2020 from 3:00pm - 5:00pm. Get dressed up and come drive thru for spooky time. Please remember to be safe and follow Health Department guidelines for Halloween activities. AEF and along with both cities are following LA County Health Department guidelines;

http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/coronavirus/docs/community/GuidanceHalloween.pdf

Our Keiki Camp has been successful and supportive for our students and families. The fee based program has benefited many families in the area and assisted with our students mental and social well-being. As we look forward and with the current unknown return to in-person learning at our schools, this is a wonderful option for parents to look at. https://www.aef4kids.com/keikicamp

I would like to welcome our newest Director Thomas Wong. Thomas comes to AEF with a wealth of volunteer and community involvement for many years and is a great addition to our Board. https://www.aef4kids.com/board-of-directors

We are currently selling tickets for the annual Shopping Extravaganza at the Citadel. The Citadel has taken extreme measures for COVID-19 guidelines so that you may have a safe shopping experience. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/shopping-extravaganza-social-distance-style-tickets-117597745021

I know we all are dealing with stress and anxiety during the pandemic which impacts our children. This pandemic impacts not only us as adults, but also impacts our children. We need to explain and model for them the need to physically distance from one another, wear a mask, not congregate in large groups and ensure we are washing our hands frequently. This can take an emotional toll on a child and as parents, we need to watch for symptoms of distress. We must continue to focus on the positive and be a role model. I have attached a link for a resource:https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources-and-podcasts/school-climate-safety-and-crisis/health-crisis-resources/helping-children-cope-with-changes-resulting-from-covid-19

I want to thank the City of Alhambra, Alhambra Unified School District, Alhambra Teachers Association and especially our Board of Directors who supported and participated at the first annual food drive on August 29, 2020. At the event, over 1200 families were given food during the drive up event. Many AUSD students and staff members were present to assist with loading the food and other items for our community needs. The Tzu Chi Association distributed backpacks and school supplies for our students as well. This was a great community event that brought together many different organizations for the betterment of everyone who lives in our school district area.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, I want to thank each and every one of you as we deal with this pandemic. I am hopeful that soon, this will pass and we can all get back to our normal daily routines.

Stay safe & healthy,

Stephen R. Perry

President
